I happened to notice that in most portraits the women are facing to the left. Turns out this is no fluke, as explained here:
On a slightly less relevant note, this painting by John Singer Sargent is a personal favorite. I love the gold and black color. I've been contemplating how/when/where to use a copy of it in my apartment. Gallery wall, perhaps?
